Gender based violence

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a violence that is directed at an individual based on his or her biological sex or gender identity. It includes physical, sexual,verbal,emotional, and pyschological abuse.

Gender-based violence can be in the form of:

* Child marriage

* trafficking for sex or slavery

* Female genital  mutilation

* Honour killings

* partner violence

* Sexual,emotional or physical violence

 A day hardly go by  without news pertaining gender violence. We live in a sick and broken Society where gender base violence has become a daily topic.  In most cases it seems to be mostly perpetrated by men against women.

There are a lot of factors that contribute to gender-based violence in our Society.

1. culture

- cultural  norms includes misplaced belief that men are stronger and superior to women. women are seen as assets and that men owe them and can do what they want to do with them.

2. Alcohol

-when a men is drunk he unashamedly violate women both physical and sexually

3. Poverty

- just as empowering women can help eliminate hunger, food scarcity also leads to increased gender-based violence.

4. Community ignorance and inadequate education/information

- We cannot hope to eradicate GBV without educating, informing and involving communities . Raising awareness should not only be done  when there are new cases,it should be done on a daily basis.

On my next post we will discuss more about the effects of GBV and some possible solutions.

#let's end GBV together
