 What is a Urinary track infection?



A Urinary track infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of your Urinary system, Kidneys, Ureters, bladder and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract which is the bladder and urethra, Women are at greater risk of  developing a UTI than men. Infection limited to your bladder can be painful πŸ˜·πŸ˜”. If a UTI spread to your kidneys it cause serious consequences.




 Symptoms of a UTI

* A strong, persistent urge to urinate



* A burning sensation when urinating 

* Passing frequent, small amounts of urine

*Urine that appears cloudy



* Strong smelling urine

*Urine that appears red, bright pink or coca cola color

* Pain around your lower back




Causes of UTI

UTI  typically occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the Urethra and begin to multiply in the bladder. 

Risk factors

* Female anatomy, a woman has a shorter Urethra than a man, which shortens the distance that bacteria must travel to reach the bladder.

* Sexual activity, Sexually active women tend to have more UTIs than women that are not Sexually active. Having a new partner or multiple sex partners also increases the risk.

*Certain types of birth control, birth control such as diaphragms or spermicidal agents increases the risk of getting a UTI.



Prevention

* Drink plenty of water, this helps dilute you urine and allowing your urine to flash out bacterias



 * Drink cranberry juice



*Wipe from front to back, it helps  prevent bacteria in the anal region from spreading to the vagina and urethra.



* Empty your bladder soon after intercourse.



* Avoid feminine products which are scented. Douches and poweders,in the genital area can irritate the urethra.



* Change your birth control method. Find out which one is safe for you as some can contribute to the growth of bacterias.



* UTI can be treated with antibiotics
